As a plant-based source of protein, the demand for soy products in Kenya is increasing. A great opportunity, thought James Ododa and Esther Njoroge. With their company Ndivisi, which has been trading soybeans since 2015, they decided to start processing them into soybean meal and oil. For the 2,000 small-scale farmers they work with this is good news, because the increasing demand provides a stable buyer for their soy and a sustainable source of income. Moreover, the high demand provides opportunities to expand their network significantly and partner with over 3,000 more farmers, who can improve their circumstances.

CLECAM 3
For small-scale farmers in Rwanda, getting a loan is nearly impossible. And yet a small loan would enable them to significantly improve their productivity. Microcredit institution CLECAM gives them a chance to do so. Like Marie Chantal: "Before, my production was low because of lack of capital. With a loan from CLECAM, I could buy seeds at the right time and my yields have almost tripled.” she says. “Now, my pension is secured." This loan will allow CLECAM to give more than 700 farmers, more than half of whom are women, a small loan to also improve their livelihoods.

Food prices are skyrocketing in Kenya. This gave entrepreneur James Ododa the idea to produce soybean meal himself. This pulse is the basic ingredient for many foods and animal feeds, but it does not grow in Kenya itself. It does, however, in neighboring Uganda. A great opportunity, James thought, and started working with 2,000 Ugandan soybean farmers. His company Ndvisi buys the soy from them and processes it itself into soybean meal. In doing so, the company offers a cheaper alternative to expensive imports, making food in Kenya more affordable. Moreover, Ndvisi simultaneously provides a better income for small-scale Ugandan soybean farmers.
